Leon Merton Johnson

SOUTH PORTLAND – Leon Merton Johnson, 87, of South Portland passed away at Mercy Hospital on Aug. 29, 2023. He was born in Portland on Oct. 11, 1935, son to the late James and Marjorie (Knox) Johnson.

Leon received his education through the South Portland school system, graduating class of 1953. After high school he went on to serve his country in the United States Army. He spent much of his working career as a civil engineer for the E. C. Jordan Co. and later as an automotive warehouse associate. He also spent some time as a production associate for Barber Foods.

Leon married Phyllis Mercer on May 20, 1966, and Leon adopted her son, Lance, shortly afterwards. He and Phyllis remained together until her passing on Oct. 29, 1979.

Leon was an enthusiastic sports fanatic and had a deep passion for horse racing. So much so that he and his brother William co-owned a horse that they raced at Scarborough Downs.

Leon is survived by his sisters Ellen Belanger (Robert L. Belanger decd.), Annie Wiemert (John H. Wiemert decd.), and Paula Harnden (Earl Harnden decd.), his brother, William H. Johnson (Christine Johnson); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Phyllis; his son, Lance; his brother, Walter F. Johnson (Corinne Johnson decd.).

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 143 Blue Star Ave. in Augusta.
