Susan (Roach) Malia

PORTLAND – Susan Roach Malia, beloved wife and mother, passed away after a long illness on Feb. 1, 2026.

Born March 19, 1951, in Portland, Susan spent her childhood on Munjoy Hill, where she developed strong roots and lifelong relationships.

Throughout her school years, Susan distinguished herself in both the arts and athletics. She excelled in tap and ballet, demonstrating grace and discipline, and later taught ballet for a time. She was equally talented in gymnastics and speed skating, winning numerous competitions. She was a proud graduate of Portland High School, Class of 1969 and upon graduation worked at Union Mutual Insurance Company.

On July 3, 1972, Susan married Joseph Malia, a fellow Munjoy Hill native. Together, they raised their family in the same neighborhood where Susan herself had grown up. While her primary focus was on raising her children, Susan also worked outside the home when family responsibilities allowed. In later years, she became well known as a neighborhood crossing guard: a role that further cemented her place as an integral part of the community. Parents, children, joggers and dog walkers came to know and appreciate Susan’s reliable and friendly presence.

Much like her own mother, Susan cherished the simple joys of spending time outdoors with her pets. She devoted a good deal of her free time to walking her own dogs along the Eastern Promenade, where she enjoyed the open view of the ocean and the sense of community. These walks became a cherished routine, allowing Susan to connect with neighbors and fellow pet owners.

As an avid animal lover, Susan rescued countless stray cats and welcomed shelter dogs and rabbits into her home, always ensuring that each animal received the love and care they deserved. She passed this compassion down to her children and grandchildren. Susan’s influence will continue to inspire her family and community, making the world a better and more compassionate place for generations to come.

Susan is survived by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Malia. Together, they built a family, and Susan’s legacy lives on through her children, Wendy, Melanie, Anne, and Joseph. Her grandchildren, Joseph, Catherine, Natasha, Greta, Steven, Timothy, Abby, and Sophie, brought her immense joy and pride. Susan’s family was the center of her world, and her compassion will continue to shape their lives for years to come.

Susan was predeceased by her beloved parents, William and Irene Roach. She was also preceded in death by Tim and Paul Gerry, and baby Joseph Malia III. She is with them now.

Her husband, Joe, and eldest child, Wendy, were with her until the end and want to thank both the Springbrook Center staff and Beacon Hospice Care staff for all of their support for the past few years and the love they gave to “Mama Sue”.

Farewell, Susan,

May all the Irish blessings that ever were be yours now and evermore.
