John Joseph Hewitt
WEST BATH – John Joseph Hewitt, 86, of West Bath, passed away on Feb. 2, 2026, following a short battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by family and was at peace.
John was born into a life defined by love, dedication, and deep commitment to those around him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sheila Hewitt; and his six children: Catherine O’Malley (husband Michael) of Jacksonville, Florida; Anne Hewitt of Santa Fe, New Mexico; John Brian Hewitt (wife Larcie) of Melvin Village, New Hampshire; Joseph Hewitt (wife Liz) of Brookline, Massachusetts; Michael Hewitt (wife Debbie Perlstein) of Brookline, Massachusetts; and Alison Hinkle (husband Greg) of Hollywood, Maryland and his sister, Helen Scully of Medway, Massachusetts; and his brothers-in-law, Dan Kelley of Hingham, Massachusetts, Tim Kelley (wife Joline) of Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Dennis Kelley (wife Anne Marie) of Westwood, Massachusetts, as well as many, many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was a proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren: Elizabeth Hewitt (d. 2013), Sidney Pouliot, Andrew Hewitt, Ben Hewitt, Grace O’Malley, Mike O’Malley, Colby Hewitt, Charlie Hewitt, Kathleen Hinkle, Daniel Hewitt, Zachary Hewitt, Cecilia Hinkle, Matthew Hewitt, and Owen Hewitt; and a devoted great-grandfather to Nova Enterline, Atlas Enterline, Wilder Enterline, and Luna Elizabeth Enterline.
John was a devoted and enthusiastic supporter of his children’s athletics and activities. He rarely missed a game or meet, often rearranging his schedule to be there, and his unmistakable voice could always be heard cheering from the sidelines. He coached Little League, youth basketball, and youth soccer and took great pride in watching his children compete, celebrating their effort and joy in the game whether they won or lost.
John’s greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and quiet strength that will continue to guide those who knew him best.
