Barbara Jean Flickinger
RAYMOND – Barbara Jean Flickinger, 88, of Raymond, died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2026, at Country Village Assisted Living in Casco.
She was born on June 23, 1937, in Woonsocket, RI, a daughter of James and Sophia (Kukla) McKernan.
She attended Immaculate Conception Grade School, and graduated from Brookville Area High School. She went on to attend Alleghany School of Nursing in Pennsylvania earning a degree in Nursing. Her nursing supervisor shared in her 1958 yearbook, “Innocence personified. Can always be trusted. God can only make one of her type each century.” She became a registered nurse and worked as a young woman at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital and later worked at Brookville Area Hospital.
On Sept. 19, 1959 she married the love of her life Donald Flickinger in Brookville, Pa. She said her life began when she married Don. They made their home in Warren, Pa. and then Windham, Maine, where she was Director of Nursing at Ledgewood Manor. She also worked at New England Rehab and was a supervisor at Community Health Services. Her final nursing job was at Country Village Assisted Living in Casco, Maine. This Assisted Living became her loving home at the end of her life.
She was a member of North Windham Union Church but was a Catholic at heart as she had converted to being a Protestant after marrying. She had a deep faith and lived with extreme conviction to always do the right thing.
Barbara enjoyed gardening and always had a beautiful rose garden. She loved to cook and was extremely witty with a wonderful sense of humor. She was a devoted friend and loved to go out to eat. She was an accomplished nurse with extremely high ethics and standards. It was her true gift from God.
Barbara’s biggest joy in her life was her family, her son-in-law Joe, daughter Nancy, and her grandchildren Joey and Sophie. She loved us fiercely and was very present in our lives.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Sczurko and her husband Joseph of Windham; grandchildren, Joey Sczurko and Sophia Sczurko.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Flickinger on Nov. 16, 2008.
