James Young
PHIPPSBURG – James Hamilton Young of Phippsburg passed away on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, at 12:46 a.m., while in hospice care. He left us peacefully, surrounded by loving family and friends. Into his last days he had kept his enjoyment of company and his wry sense of humor.
Jim was born in Rhode Island, then grew up in Concord, Mass. along with his two sisters. After some time in Chicago he joined friends forming a group household back on the East Coast, which led to Maine becoming his home for the rest of his life.
Handy with design and woodworking, Jim designed and built several houses integrating energy efficiency and timber framing. For many years he handcrafted sculptures which now sit in gardens around the world. Finding delight and health in movement, he became a devoted and beloved member of Maine’s improvisational dance community. He was a lifelong day-sailor and coastal cruiser, though by far most of his time in boats was spent happily moving floating islands around Winnegance Lake so he’d have a clear channel to go out for a swim.
He leaves behind two sons, a daughter-in-law, five grandchildren and his older sister, all of whom he adored. We will remember him as affectionate, creative, capable and kind.
A celebration of Life will be planned for the spring.
