Frederick Augustin Bates

NAPLES – Frederick Augustin Bates, “Butch”, 85, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at home surrounded by his family. He had his family members caring for him, telling him how much they loved him, and sharing photos and stories for the last two weeks of his life in his favorite place.

Born on Sept. 6, 1940, in South Berwick, Fred later moved to Sanford where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1963 in Germany. After returning from military service, he was a contract engineer and traveled the country. He met the love of his life, Ninette, in New Jersey, married and then settled in Maine to raise their family.

Fred had a 25-year career at Bath Iron Works and was fortunate to retire at 55 and enjoy 30 years of retirement. While retired, he was blessed to split his time between Maine and Florida.

His passions were hunting, fishing, skiing, taking long walks and spending time with family and friends. Anyone who encountered him felt his zest for life in the stories he told.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ninette L. Bates (Bonnano) of 38 years; his father, Frederick Bates, mother, Ann Bates (Mauzerolle); and sister, Shyla Settles.

He is survived by his daughters Emily Bates and Lora Autullo, his son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Maureen Bates; grandchildren, Sophia Autullo, Collin and Owen Bates; along with great-granddaughter, Charolette Borgsmiller.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and funeral service will follow from 3:30 to 4 p.m., on Thursday, May 28, at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.
