Bruce Berry

BOWDOINHAM – Bruce Berry, 84, of Bowdoinham, Maine, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, after a battle with progressive COPD.

Born on Dec. 3, 1941, Bruce was the son of Ledlie and Priscilla Berry.

Bruce served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era and was stationed in Germany. His time in the military helped shape the strength, discipline, and perseverance that he carried throughout the rest of his life. After his service, he returned to Maine, where he built a life rooted in hard work, family, and a deep connection to the outdoors.

Bruce’s career reflected his love of working with his hands and his appreciation for the land and waters of Maine. He began his working life as a well driller before becoming an eel fisherman on Merrymeeting Bay, a trade he practiced for more than 25 years. He knew the waters, seasons, and traditions of the bay well and took great pride in his work. During the off-season Bruce worked as a carpenter, builder, and accomplished boat builder, using his skill and craftsmanship to create and repair things with care and precision. Whether building a home, restoring a boat, or lending a hand to a friend, Bruce believed that anything worth doing was worth doing well.

Family and friendship were at the center of Bruce’s life. He treasured time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and the many friends who became like family over the years. Friday nights were a favorite tradition, filled with laughter and the company of good friends. He also enjoyed playing cribbage every day with his wife, Melody, or his brother, David—simple moments that brought him great happiness.

Bruce was known for his quick wit, infectious laugh, and remarkable ability to find humor even during life’s most difficult moments. He had a gift for making people smile and often entertained others with stories, including the many times he managed to hurt himself in one way or another. Even as his health declined, he met each day with a smile and a joke, reminding those around him that there was always something worth laughing about. His ability to laugh despite life’s circumstances was perhaps his greatest gift. That quiet optimism, more than anything else, carried him through adversity and became one of the greatest lessons he left for those who loved him.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents; and his older sister, Diana.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Melody Berry; his daughters Diana Hinkley “Muffie” and Sara Berry, and his son, Sam Berry. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Dalton, Olive, and Bridger; his great-grandchildren, Kane and Natalie; his brother, David Berry; along with extended family, lifelong friends, neighbors, and countless people whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and steady presence.

A celebration of Bruce’s life will be Aug. 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 291 White Rd., Bowdoinham.

Bruce will be remembered for his hard work, craftsmanship, resilience, humor, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the stories he shared, and the laughter he brought to those fortunate enough to know him.

The tide will continue to rise and fall on Merrymeeting Bay, but those who knew Bruce will always hear his laughter carried on the wind.
