Lt. Col. Albert H. McLain

UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas – Lt. Col. Albert H. McLain, United States Air Force (retired), passed away peacefully at his home in Universal City, Texas, on July 9, 2026, following a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 83.

Born in Portland, Maine, Al attended the University of Maine, where he met his future wife, Thelma Craig. After graduating in 1966, he accepted a commission in the United States Air Force and earned a Master of Computing Sciences from Texas A&M University through an Air Force graduate education program.

A pioneer in military information technology, Lt. Col. McLain served at the 4745th Radar Evaluation Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah; the Air Force Personnel Center at Randolph AFB, Texas; the Air Force Data Systems Design Center at Gunter AFS, Alabama; Headquarters Pacific Air Forces at Hickam AFB, Hawaii and returning to Randolph AFB before retiring in 1987. He later joined Mei Technologies in San Antonio, Texas.

Al enjoyed golf and the friendships he built at Olympia Hills Golf Course. Above all, he was devoted to his family and was known for his integrity, humility, quiet strength, and unwavering sense of duty.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his eldest son, Scott.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma; his son, Glenn McLain and wife April, his daughter, Jenny Lamont and husband Scott; his grandchildren, Forrest McLain, Kailey Lamont, Evan Lamont, and Kyra Lamont; his brothers Timothy and Richard McLain; and many nieces, nephews; extended family members; friends, and former colleagues.

A service with full military honors will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, Aug. 21, at 9:30 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Funeral Caring USA. For additional information, please call 210-822-4445.
