The Boston Red Sox picked up their contract option on pitcher Clay Buchholz, the team announced Thursday.
Buchholz, 32, went 8-10 last year with a 4.78 ERA in both starting and relief roles. His contract for 2017 is reportedly worth $13.5 million.
The Red Sox also picked up the 2017 option on David Ortiz “as a formality,” according to the team’s press release. Ortiz has announced his retirement.
Boston declined the contract option on Ryan Hanigan, an expected move considering the team has other catchers, including Sandy Leon, Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart.
Swihart, third baseman Pablo Sandoval and pitchers Carson Smith and Brandon Workman were all reinstated to the 40-man roster from the 60-day disabled list.
Infielder Josh Rutledge was also reinstated from the 60-day DL and designated to Triple-A Pawtucket.
• Boston also exercised its $16 million club option on David Ortiz, though that’s a formality. He’s still expected to retire.
