Real Madrid scores late for tie at Barcelona
Sergio Ramos scored in the 90th minute Saturday to secure Real Madrid a 1-1 draw at Barcelona and extend its unbeaten streak to 33 matches.
Ramos charged in to head Luka Modric’s free kick past goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who got a hand on the ball but couldn’t keep it out. Luis Suarez’s header from a free kick by Neymar had given Barcelona the lead in the 53rd minute.
Real Madrid, coached by Zinedine Zidane, holds a six-point lead over second-place Barcelona in the Spanish league.
PREMIER LEAGUE: In a feisty, action-packed game between two of England’s heavyweights, Chelsea scored three goals in the final half-hour and rallied for a 3-1 win at Manchester City.
OLYMPICS
DIVER DIES: Sammy Lee, a two-time gold medal-winning diver who later mentored a four-time Olympic diving champion, Greg Louganis, died Friday at 96 of pneumonia in Newport Beach, California.
Lee became the first man to win consecutive Olympic titles in platform diving in 1948 and 1952, and was the oldest diver at age 32 to win Olympic gold. He also earned a bronze in 3-meter springboard at the 1948 Games.
SKIING
DOWNHILL: Ilka Stuhec of Slovenia completed a downhill sweep at Lake Louise, Alberta.
Coming off her first World Cup victory Friday, Stuhec finished in 1 minute, 24.95 seconds on the course shortened because of deteriorating visibility. The defending overall World Cup champion, Laura Gut of Switerland, was second in 1:25.06, followed by Edit Miklos of Hungary in 1:25.38.
• Kjetil Jansrud of Norway won the season’s first World Cup downhill at Val d’Isere, France, a day after his victory in super-G.
Jansrud was 0.26 seconds faster than Peter Fill of Italy, the defending World Cup downhill champion.
SKELETON: Yun Sung-bin of South Korea won the men’s World Cup season-opening race at Whistler, British Columbia, the second victory of his career on the circuit. Yun finished two runs in 1 minute, 45.86 seconds. Alexander Tretiakov of Russia was second in 1:45.98, and Matt Antoine of the U.S. used the strength of a flawless second heat to grab the bronze in 1:46.22.
CROSS COUNTRY: American Jessie Diggins won an individual World Cup race for the second time, beating overall leader Heidi Weng on the 5-kilometer course at Lillehammer, Norway.
JUMPING: Kamil Stoch helped Poland to victory over Germany in a World Cup team event at Klingenthal, Germany. Stoch soared 139.0 meters with his first jump and 140.0 with his second, earning 294.8 points toward Poland’s total of 1,128.7.
LUGE
WORLD CUP: Tatjana Huefner of Germany tied the career record for World Cup women’s wins, prevailing at Mount Van Hoevenberg at Lake Placid, New York, for her 37th victory on the circuit.
Huefner is tied with Sylke Otto for the all-time lead, three ahead of the reigning world champion, Natalie Geisenberger.
HORSE RACING
AQUEDUCT: Highway Star edged High Ridge Road by a nose in the $250,000 Go For Wand Handicap for fillies and mares.
It was the third straight win for the lone 3-year-old in the field. The 7-1 shot trained by Rodrigo Ubillo improved her record to 5-0-1 in her seven starts.
