A storm carrying snow and freezing rain is making its way into southern Maine Tuesday, with the National Weather Service calling for 3 to 5 inches of snow in Portland.
Meteorologist Andy Pohl said the storm will continue falling throughout the afternoon and early evening hours before turning to freezing rain between 8 and 10 p.m.
“That’s when the kitchen sink forecast starts,” Pohl said, referring to the wintry mix that will last into the early morning hours Wednesday.
Wind gusts could reach 20 mph. Pohl said the storm will likely end before the Wednesday morning commute. During the day Wednesday, Portland will bask in temperatures pushing toward 50 degrees.
As of Monday, Portland had received 26.9 inches of snow this winter. The normal snowfall accumulation by Feb. 6 is 37.1 inches. As of that date last year, Portland had recorded 29.3 inches of snow.
