A Buckfield barn was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon.
It took 50 firefighters from Buckfield and five area fire departments an hour to contain the 3:30 p.m. blaze at 11 Jim Warrren Rd. Firefighters had to shuttle water from 6 miles away. The farm is owned by Richard Piper, who lives on the property
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Maine Fire Marshal’s office. Investigators are reviewing a video of the scene from a barn surveillance camera.
The farm owners and passersby managed to remove llamas, goats and other animals from the barn but a baby goat and some chickens were killed by the fire.
Farm equipment, including a tractor, excavator and van, was also destroyed. An attached machine shop was also leveled. The damage was estimated at more than $100,000.
Buckfield firefighter Vicki Schmidt said the rescued animals are being temporarily housed at other farms.
No person was hurt in the fire.
