YARMOUTH — Aubrey Currie Thomas, 74, died at home on Jan. 25 following a year-long fight with lung cancer.
Thomas was born May 8, 1940, in Bronxville, New York, to Allen and Muriel (Currie) Thomas. He grew up at The Graham School, which was run by his father and grandfather in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
He attended Tufts University and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. On the day he graduated, he also was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Thomas served in Vietnam, where he was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He retired from the Marines as a lieutenant colonel.
Following his active duty, he attended Hunter College in New York City to complete his master’s degree in clinical social work. In the family tradition of service to children and families, he worked in New York and then for 23 years at Sweetser of Saco, including 11 years as executive director. Thomas then consulted for several years and later worked at Spurwink, in Portland, as a quality assurance/quality improvement coordinator. He retired in 2008.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, May Matheson-Thomas; his daughters, Megan Genthner and husband, Michael, of Windham, and Aubin Libby and husband, Brian, of South Portland; his grandson, Maxfield Genthner; his sisters, Margery Clark and husband, Jared, of Gorham, and Mary Schirm and husband, Dean, of Thousand Oaks, California; his sister-in-law, Heidi Thomas, of Anaheim, California; his uncle, Paul Thomas, of Northbrook, Illinois; and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Devon Evans and the staff of New England Cancer Specialists for their professionalism, support and care, and also extends gratitude to Hospice of Southern Maine.
A memorial service was held Jan. 31 at Lindquist Funeral Home, in Yarmouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172, or to the charity of one’s choice.
