CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Receiver Steve Smith has produced just like Coach Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers expected him to this season. But Rivera knows the team needs targets besides Smith for the passing game to be successful.
Smith is the only listed receiver to have more than one catch for the Panthers in each of the past two games. Brandon LaFell had one grab against the Giants and Falcons combined, and quarterback Cam Newton has spread the ball to different targets in the past two games.
“We’ve got to find ways, if teams are starting to roll toward Steve a little more, we’ve got to find ways to get him open,” Rivera said.
“Secondly, if we’re going to do some of the things we need to do, we have to expose other players to get the ball in their hands. We’ve looked at other options. Listening to (offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski) talk about it, it seems like we’re trying to create more opportunities not just for Steve but the other guys.”
Tight end Greg Olsen has 13 catches for 187 yards in the past two games after a slow start. Last week, eight Panthers had at least one catch.
“We saw the ball go to the tight end, to the backs,” Rivera said. “As long as we’re being productive and putting 28 points on the board, you’re giving yourself a chance to win.”
COLTS: Indianapolis promoted offensive tackle Tony Hills from the practice squad to the active roster.
JETS: Tight end Dustin Keller, receiver Stephen Hill, nose tackle Sione Po’uha and fullback John Conner are doubtful for the Monday night game against Houston.
PACKERS: Green Bay activated defensive end Mike Neal, who was suspended for the first four weeks of the season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
