The 2013 spring sports season was short, sweet and successful for local athletes and teams.
Highlights were plentiful.
On the diamond, Scarborough’s softball team won yet another Class A title. South Portland and Cape Elizabeth produced gaudy records in the regular season, but both were upset in the semifinals.
Scarborough’s baseball team had the best regular season in Western A, but was upset in the quarterfinals by Portland. Cape Elizabeth and South Portland were both ousted in the preliminary round.
Two of three boys’ lacrosse teams, Cape Elizabeth in Class B and Scarborough in Class A, took home championships. It was the Red Storm’s fourth in a row and the Capers’ first since 2010. South Portland produced its best season to date, but was upset in the semifinal round.
On the girls’ side, South Portland fell in the quarterfinals, Scarborough’s three-year title reign ended with a semifinal round loss to Kennebunk and Cape Elizabeth’s quest for an elusive championship was denied for the third year in a row by nemesis Waynflete in the Western B Final.
The outdoor track and field state meet produced several memorable performances, most notably the Scarborough boys’ team winning a first ever Class A championship.
Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ tennis team returned to the pinnacle. The Capers girls, along with the Scarborough girls, got to the regional final.
While we’re all glad summer’s here, let’s take one final look back at the moments and champions that made the spring of 2013 one to remember.

5) Cape Elizabeth boys’ tennis back on top
You can’t keep the Cape Elizabeth boys’ tennis team down for long and after finishing second to Falmouth in 2011 and 2012, the Capers leapfrogged their rival this spring. Cape Elizabeth handled the Yachtsmen in the regular season, serving notice that the guard had been changed, then beat Falmouth again for good measure in the semifinals. The Capers weren’t tested in the regional or state finals and went on to capture yet another trophy.
4) First time for Scarborough boys’ track
The Scarborough boys’ indoor track program has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years, but until last month, the outdoor team hadn’t won a Class A title. That all changed, thanks to a superb team effort which allowed the Red Storm to prevail. Ryan Jamison won two events and Robert Hall and Kevin Manning were each triumphant in one as Scarborough held off Cheverus to win the championship.
3) Four in a row for Storm
Scarborough’s boys’ lacrosse team managed to accomplish something which hadn’t been done by anyone this century, win four state titles in succession. The Red Storm made its mark in the regular season, beating longtime power Yarmouth for the first time, en route to an 11-1 record. Scarborough, as it always does, then turned it up for the playoffs and handled Marshwood and Kennebunk to set up a state game rematch with Cheverus. Where the 2012 meeting between the schools was close, this one was over by halftime and the Red Storm rolled to a 15-4 victory, making history in the process.
2) Scarborough softball continues trend
Scarborough’s powerhouse softball team made it four straight odd-numbered years with a title. The Red Storm followed the go-to-Disney-in-April, celebrate-a-championship-in-June script, as it got stronger as the season progressed. Scarborough survived scares from Marshwood and Sanford in the regional playoffs, then had no trouble with Skowhegan in the state game, getting clutch hitting and strong pitching throughout. Now, the Red Storm looks to win a championship in an even-numbered season. Don’t bet against it.
1) Capers back where they belong
Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ lacrosse team set the standard for excellence in the previous century, but the titles haven’t come with the same regularity in the new millennium. After falling to Falmouth in the 2011 and 2012 regional finals, this year’s group of Capers was bound and determined to return to the pinnacle. While it wasn’t easy, Cape Elizabeth managed to do so. The Capers survived a difficult regular season gauntlet, handled Waynflete in the semifinals, then edged Falmouth in an epic overtime regional final on a goal from senior Cam Wilson. Cape Elizabeth had its hands full with Yarmouth in the state game, but wasn’t about to fall short and prevailed, 7-4, to accomplish its mission.
