HARPSWELL — Gary J. Beattie, 74, of South Harpswell, died suddenly May 16 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born July 26, 1937, in Northfield, Vt., to James and Amy Beattie.

Beattie served in the U.S. Army, earning several rifle marksmanship awards. A lifelong carpenter and mason, he worked for S.G. Philips, and traveled extensively during his career.

Beattie was a loving man with a big heart, and always was willing to help others. A highly skilled craftsman, he enjoyed building things, gardening, fishing, dancing and most recently, bee-keeping. He was a member of the Elks for many years.

He is loved and will be missed deeply by his soulmate of 33 years, Gertrude Heath, of South Harpswell; sister Georgia Maschmeier, of Alabama; his son, Eric Beattie; daughters Ann Beattie and Amy Long, of Vermont; his extended family, Sandi LeMaster, James Heath, MaryAnn Heath, Melinda Pasupulati, Roxanne Moody, Michael Heath, Timothy Heath and Mathew Heath, as well as their partners; 17 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Jim, and his daughter-in-law, Tessa Heath.

There will be a private celebration of Beattie’s life with his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.
