With the colors changing and the temperatures dipping, it’s clear that fall is in the air. With September about to give way to October, it won’t be long until we’re talking about the postseason for local athletes.

The golf regular season has concluded, we’re just a couple weeks out from the start of the cross country postseason and soccer and field hockey are closer to the end of their regular seasons than the beginning.

Here’s a glimpse at where teams stand and what’s to come.

Football

Brunswick’s football team considers to excel. The Dragons improved to 4-0 Friday with a 33-20 win at Edward Little, as standout running back Jared Jensen went over the 1,300 yard mark for the season. Brunswick is home with Cony Friday.

Mt. Ararat is at the other end of the spectrum, seeking its first win after a 53-6 home loss to reigning Eastern A champion Lawrence Friday. The Eagles go to Bangor Friday.

Morse dropped to 1-3 after a 20-14 home loss to Waterville. The Shipbuilders hope to end a three-game skid Friday when they host Madison.

Boys’ soccer

Brunswick’s boys’ soccer team was second to Lewiston in the Eastern Class A Heal Points standings at press time with a 5-2-1 record. Last week, the Dragons won at Brewer (5-0) and at home over Bangor (1-0). Brunswick was home with Messalonskee Tuesday, goes to Hampden Academy Friday and visits Oxford Hills Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat won at Lawrence (6-1) and Oxford Hills (4-0) last week to extend its win streak to four games, unbeaten streak to five and improve to 5-1-1 (seventh in Eastern A). The Eagles hosted Mt. Blue Tuesday, visit Messalonskee Friday and play host to Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

In Western B, Morse is 1-7 and 16th in the Heals after losses to visiting Lincoln Academy (3-1) and at Mt. View (1-0) before edging visiting Gardiner, 1-0. The Shipbuilders hosted Belfast Tuesday and went to MCI Thursday. Tuesday, they host Nokomis.

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Morse is first in Western B at 6-1-1 after recent victories over host Lincoln (6-0), visiting Mt. View (8-0) and visiting Gardiner (6-3). Miracle Trimble scored four goals against Lincoln, three versus Mt. View and three more against Gardiner. Paige Martin added a pair in the win over Mt. View. Brianna Williams also had a hat trick versus Gardiner. The Shipbuilders were at Belfast Tuesday, hosted MCI Thursday and go to Nokomis Tuesday of next week.

In Eastern A, Brunswick is first at 9-0 after a 7-0 home win over Brewer and a 2-1 double overtime victory at defending state champion Bangor. The Dragons were at Messalonskee Tuesday, host Hampden Saturday and welcome Oxford Hills Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat is sixth at 5-2 after a 2-1 overtime home loss to Lawrence and a 4-0 home victory over Skowhegan. The Eagles were at Mt. Blue Tuesday, host Messalonskee Friday and visit Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

Field hockey

Mt. Ararat’s field hockey team is 6-4 and fifth despite losses at Messalonskee (10-0) and at home to Lawrence (1-0) last week. Monday, the Eagles downed host Hampden Academy, 2-0. Mt. Ararat is at Bangor Saturday and hosts Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

Brunswick is clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot with a 2-6-1 mark. Last week, the Dragons sandwiched wins over host Edward Little (3-0) and visiting Hampden (1-0) around a 3-0 home loss to Brewer. After going to Bangor Tuesday and hosting Oxford Hills Thursday, Brunswick welcomes perennial champion Skowhegan Saturday and visits Cony Tuesday of next week.

In Western B, Morse, is 0-9 and 16th after recent losses to visiting Belfast (3-1) and Maranacook (2-1) and host Oceanside (3-1). After hosting Camden Hills Tuesday, the Shipbuilders go to Nokomis Saturday and host Lincoln Tuesday of next week.

Cross country

On the trails, Brunswick hosted Morse, Mt. Ararat and Mt. Blue last week. The Eagles won the girls’ meet and were second to the Cougars on the boys’ side. The Dragons were second in the girls’ meet, thanks to individual winner Tiffany Tanner (20 minutes, 13.88 seconds) and third on the boys’ side. The Shipbuilders girls were third and the boys fourth.

Local teams are at the Belfast Invitational Saturday.

Golf

Brunswick’s golf team ended the regular season 8-2, then lost a KVAC South playoff, 7-2, to Oxford Hills.

Morse and Mt. Ararat have also wrapped up their regular seasons.

The state qualifier is Wednesday.
