BRUNSWICK — Caroline L. Johnson, 88, died peacefully surrounded by her family April 22 at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

Born in Portland, Feb. 7, 1923, the daughter of Walter E. and Olive Richardson Gilliam, she attended Orr’s Island schools and Brunswick High School.

On New Year’s Eve, 1941, she married Edward R. Johnson. They lived on Orr’s Island until moving to Brunswick in 1978.

As a young woman she helped her mother manage the telephone office on Orr’s Island.  She later worked as a waitress at Cook’s Lobster and New Meadow’s Inn, and at L.L.Bean until she retired in 1988.

Her husband Edward predeceased her on July 14, 1989.

Surviving are her son, Walter L. Johnson and his wife Linda of Brunswick; four grandchildren, Lisa Snyder, Jennifer Johnson, Gregory Johnson and Caroline Nesbit; and eight great-grandchildren, Lindsay, Cody, Matthew, Jordyn, Christopher, Hunter, Olyvia and Logan.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Orr’s Island Cemetery.
