CUTLER — Glen Alan Downs, 70, died July 2 at a Bangor hospital following complications from a car accident.
Born on Nov. 26, 1939, the last child of Emma and Lawrence Downs of Scarborough, he was raised and educated in Scarborough, learning the call of the ocean, clamming and lobstering until he joined the U.S. Navy.
After leaving the U.S. Navy, he returned to Scarborough and married Donna Moffitt, and they had four children together.
Often found surrounded by children and elders, he enjoyed telling stories or talking about town history.
He was a longtime member of Engine 4 and the Scarborough Shellfish Conservation Committee.
In the mid 1990s, he and his wife Betty purchased land in Cutler, where they built a log cabin while still finding time to dig for clams.
Surviving are five children, Tim Downs of Scarborough, Tammy and Brian Kelley of Buxton, Terry and Glenn Bennett of Scarborough, Tracy Pinkham of Lewiston and Stephen Perry; three sisters, Joyce Lyons, Alyson Eisinberger and Jean Morris; sister-in-law Marie Downs; five grandchildren; and 19 nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 7 at Hobbs Funeral Home in Scarborough.
