Cheverus High School principal retires following stellar career

At his final graduation as principal of Cheverus High School, John H.R. Mullen was presented with an honorary diploma to celebrate his contributions to Cheverus; after 26 years as principal, Mullen retired at the end of this academic year. Fr. William C. Russell, S.J., the former president of Cheverus who first hired Mullen in 1979, made the special presentation at Merrill Auditorium on June 6.

Earlier this spring Cheverus announced the appointment of Dr. John Moran as the next principal. Moran previously served as the principal of St. Louis University High School, a Jesuit high school in Missouri.

Mullen will return to the classroom to teach at Cheverus.

Mullen began his 37-year career at Cheverus as a classroom teacher of history and English; before assuming the role of principal in 1990, he served as the assistant principal. During his tenure, Mullen developed a number of important initiatives including the Honors Program, a required summer reading program, a four-year service requirement, and an Ignatian formation program for faculty. In addition, he supervised the implementation of co-education, and led the preparation for accreditation evaluation of Cheverus in 1994, 2003 and in 2013.

“There is no other individual in the history of Cheverus High School who has made a more positive impact on this venerable institution,” said Fr. George E. Collins, S.J., president, Cheverus High School.

“I will leave the principal’s office with deep gratitude for the rich experiences that I will carry out with me, experiences that will remain ingrained in me for the rest of my life,” Mullen said.

Portland Public Schools named Confucius Classroom

Portland Public Schools has been named a Confucius Classroom in conjunction with the University of Southern Maine’s Confucius Institute. In becoming a Confucius Classroom, the district is able to enrich its offerings in Chinese language and culture and expand Mandarin classes at Deering and Casco Bay high schools.

To formally celebrate the recognition from Hanban, the Confucius Institute headquarters affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education, an inaugural ceremony was held May 21, at Deering High School. The program included a tree planting, ribbon-cutting, and Chinese performances. A Confucius Classroom plaque will also be awarded to the Portland Public Schools. Leaders from the Portland Public Schools, the University of Southern Maine and the city of Portland, and dignitaries from the Chinese Consulate attended the event.
