Saturday, Sept. 28: The First Congregational Christian Church in New Gloucester hosts a community contra dance from 7-9 p.m. The event will be held in the Vestry Community Room at 19 Gloucester Hill Road, and features live music with caller Kathryn Larson. Sept. 28: The Shakers have cultivated apples for more than 200 years, even developing two varieties of their own that were named the James Sweets and the Oliver Sweets. Explore interesting aspects of the Shakers’ heritage during Apple Saturdays. Featured events on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. include a home-baked apple pie sale, sale of the Shakers’ famous homemade potato donuts with hot coffee, guided museum tours and guided nature hikes through the Shakers’ woods at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Free cider pressing all day long, so bring your own apples to be hand-pressed or purchase them at the Shaker Store. Tuesday, Oct. 1: Windham’s Monthly Grief Support meeting sponsored by VNA Home Health & Hospice will be discussing “Seasons of Grief” from 6-7:30 p.m. at North Windham Union Church, 723 Roosevelt Trail, Route 302, Windham. The group, which is sponsored by the church’s Mission Committee, is open to anyone grieving the death of a loved one. Friday, Oct. 4: Rippling Waters Farm and MSAD 6 are sponsoring a fundraiser at the Bonny Eagle Middle School from 5:30-8:30 p.m. to support and sustain school gardens in the district. The event includes a delicious harvest dinner featuring vegetable lasagna, salad, bread, corn and apple crisp from local farms prepared by staff at Pearson’s Cafe? at Saint Joseph College. Guest speakers include state Rep. Mike Shaw, and Superintendent Frank Sherburne. A short video presentation will be shown providing highlights from this year’s school garden activities. A live and silent auction will feature golf and photography lessons, Amtrak tickets to New York City, a weekend woods getaway, and gift certificates to restaurants. Garden-themed art created by students will be displayed during the event, and produce from the school gardens will be featured. Tickets for the event can be obtained from school offices, Rippling Waters (776-4961) or at the door. Adult tickets are $10, youth $5, and children under 4 are $1.

Tuesday, Oct. 8: Gray Historical Society is sponsoring “DNA Testing for Genealogy and Health” at 6:30 p.m. in the Gray Town Council Chambers at the town office complex. New to the idea of DNA testing? Learn about the three major test types – Y-DNA, mtDNA, and the new atDNA – and what each offers to the genealogist. Dogs on leashes and cats in cages. The town clerk will also be there to license dogs if anyone wishes to do so. She will accept cash or checks. No credit cards.
