McGirt, Piercy share second-round lead at PGA Tour’s Canadian Open in Ontario

William McGirt shot a 4-under 66 for a share of the second-round lead Friday with Scott Piercy in the Canadian Open at Ancaster, Ontario.

Piercy followed his opening 8-under 62 with a 67 to join McGirt at 11-under 129 at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, matching the tournament 36-hole scoring record.

Robert Garrigus was two strokes back after a 66, and Bo Van Pelt was 9 under after a 66. Tim Clark, Vijay Singh and Josh Teater were 8 under. Clark had a 62, Singh shot 67 and Teater 65.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: American Gary Hallberg shot a 7-under 63 in the windy second round of the Senior British Open at Turnberry, Scotland, to take a three-stroke lead over Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman.

LPGA: American Stacy Lewis shot a 3-under 69 to top the Evian Masters leaderboard at 12 under, a stroke ahead of South Korea’s Ilhee Lee at Evian-Les-Bains, France.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen shot a 4-under 68 to take a three-stroke lead over Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg after the third round of the Lyoness Open at Atzenbrugg, Austria.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Nick LaPointe had two home runs and five RBI to lead the Sanford Mainers (13-21) to a 16-2 victory against the Mystic Schooners (6-31) in a seven-inning game at Mystic, Conn.

Jared Hagel, Jared Betts and Paul Kronenfeld each homered, and Jerry Ferris scattered three hits over six innings for Sanford.

FCBL: Michael Cleary singled in the winning run in the 10th inning for the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (18-24) in a 10-9 victory against the visiting Seacoast Mavericks (19-21).

Matt Verrier had three RBI, Sam Balzano added four hits with a pair of doubles, and Dan Fratus had three hits and scored twice.

SENIOR LEAGUE: Ryan Collins pitched six strong innings, and had three hits with an RBI to lead Scarborough to an 8-1 victory against Coastal in the opener of the best-of-three state championship series at Bangor.

SOCCER

RANGERS DOWN: Glasgow Rangers, the Scottish champion a record 54 times before going through bankruptcy, will begin next season in the fourth tier, Scotland’s lowest professional league, after the move was approved by the country’s soccer authorities.

Americans Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu and Alejandro Bedoya are on Rangers but may leave.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Minnesota Timberwolves signed free agent Andrei Kirilenko, bringing the versatile forward back to the NBA after a one-season absence.

Kirilenko, 31, is playing with the Russian team at the Olympics. He played 10 years for Utah, averaging 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, but spent the 2011-12 season with CKSA Moscow. He won the most valuable player and best defender awards in the Euroleague.

HOCKEY

NHL: Los Angeles hired former St. Louis Blues coach Davis Payne as an assistant to Coach Darryl Sutter.

St. Louis fired Payne on Nov. 6 after nearly two years behind the bench. Ken Hitchcock took over and led the Blues to the second round of the playoffs, where Los Angeles swept them.
