Magic choose Vaughn to succeed Van Gundy

Jacque Vaughn has been hired as the Orlando Magic’s head coach.

Vaughn, 37, becomes the 10th coach in team history and replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was fired May 21. Vaughn played 12 seasons in the NBA, including 80 games for the Magic in 2002-03. The former Kansas Jayhawks standout has never been a head coach, but comes to Orlando after spending the past two seasons as an assistant in San Antonio.

GOLF

PGA: Robert Garrigus broke the 54-hole scoring record at the Canadian Open that was set more than a half-century ago by Arnold Palmer.

At Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ancaster, Ontario, Garrigus used his power and some timely putts for a 6-under 64 that gave him a one-shot lead over William McGirt, who lost ground with a 66.

Garrigus was at 16-under 194, one shot better than Palmer in 1955 at Weston Golf & Country Club outside Toronto, and matched two years ago by Dean Wilson at St. George’s Golf & Country Club. Palmer went on to win the 1955 Canadian Open for the first of his 62 titles on the PGA Tour.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Bernard Langer shot a 4-under 66 for a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples heading into the final round of the Senior British Open at Turnberry, Scotland.

Couples had seven birdies in a round of 64. Peter Fowler shot a 65 and was two strokes back.

LPGA: American Stacy Lewis birdied the final hole for a 1-over 73 and a share of the lead with lead with South Korea’s Inbee Park after the third round of the Evian Masters at Evian-les-Bains, France.

Park had a 70 to match Lewis at 11-under 205.

Natalie Gulbis, the 2007 winner for her lone LPGA Tour title, was a stroke back along with Karrie Webb and 17-year-old amateur Hyo Joo Kim.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Bernd Wiesberger of Austria had a 7-under 65 to win the Austrian Open by three strokes at Datzenbrugg, Austria.

SOFTBALL

SENIOR LEAGUE: Gray-New Gloucester broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third inning on its way to a 6-1 win over Westfield, Mass., in its opening game at the Eastern Regional in Worcester, Mass.

After Sam Libby reached on a fielder’s choice, Taylor Whaley, Abby Ordway, Maddie Elliott and Sandy Ricardi hit consecutive singles to make it 5-1.

Gray-New Gloucester added a run in the fourth when Alex Thompson doubled and was singled home by Whaley.

BASEBALL

FCBL: Colin Gay drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning and Dillon Ryan closed out the game with five scoreless innings of relief to lead the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (19-24) to a 3-2 win over the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (22-17) at Massachusetts.

NECBL: Gavin Stark went 3 for 3 with three RBI and four runs scored while leading the Sanford Mainers (14-22) to a 17-5 win over the Vermont Mountaineers (17-20) at Goodall Park.

Anthony Hajjar, Ino Patron and Nate LaPointe each added three RBI.

SOCCER

EXHIBITION: Liverpool and Tottenham played to a scoreless draw in a friendly before 42,723 fans in Baltimore, at the home stadium of the NFL’s Ravens.

The Ravens play on artificial turf, but the pitch consisted entirely of 500 rolls of natural grass laid on top of the artificial carpet for the match between English Premier League sides.
