Finally, it seems like spring – almost! This is a good time to take advantage of a warm day or early evening, while it’s still light, and clean up a cemetery near you. Perhaps the winter wreaths at your relative’s (or someone’s) headstone should be removed. I’ve recently seen broken vases and rusty Christmas ornaments and wreaths that ought to be taken away. Lend a hand to the environment and do your part. Windham has a cemetery ordinance with guidelines on what’s appropriate for our nearly two dozen cemeteries. Bean Supper

The American Legion Post 148 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10643 will hold a baked bean supper on Saturday, May 10, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Windham Veterans Center located behind Hannaford’s at the end of Veteran’s Memorial Drive, which is beside Friendly’s. Price is $8 per person. Children under 8, free. Proceeds from the supper will go to help pay for upgrading the parking lot. The menu includes several types of beans, hot dogs, casseroles, cole slaw, potato salad, rolls and pies.

Bingo at Veterans Center

Every Tuesday through Oct. 28, the Standish Memorial Post 128 sponsors Bingo at the Windham Veterans Center, doors open at 4 p.m.; Bingo at 6:30 p.m., Early Bird at 6:10 p.m. WTA – Pull Tabs – 50/50. Cold drinks, chips, crackers, candy, popcorn.

Memorial Day Parade

The Field-Allen American Legion Post 148 coordinates Memorial Day events for the town and is seeking veterans, particularly World War II vets, to participate in this special day. For those who cannot or are reluctant to walk/march in the parade, rides will be provided. Help make this an extra special event and contact Post Adjutant Dave Tanguay at 892-1306 for more information. This year, the parade will include the fife & drum unit from the 3rd Maine, Co. A Civil War re-enactors who will be camped out all weekend at the historical society. Many events are planned for the Windham Veterans Center on Memorial Day, including lunch.

Windham VFW Meets

The Windham VFW Post 10643 will meet at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, at Windham Veterans Center. Note the business meeting will start at 5 p.m. sharp; installation of officers will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by supper. The Veterans Center is located behind the Windham Mall (Hannaford’s). Take Veterans Memorial Drive by Friendly’s and follow to the end.

Smith Cemetery Association Meeting

Smith Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the public meeting room, Windham Public Library. Members may send their dues to the Association at P. O. Box 1575, Windham, ME 04062 or bring them to the meeting. The agenda includes discussion about the condition of the cemetery, repair and/or cleaning the stones, a review of bylaws and a report from the treasurer. Roast Beef Supper

Windham Hill UCC will hold a public roast beef supper from 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 10. The menu includes rolls, roast beef, mashed potato, green beans and homemade pies. $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12. The church is on Windham Center Road.

Spring Lunch for Seniors

There will be a Spring Gathering-Bag Lunch at noon on Monday, May 12, at Lakes Region Senior Center, at Sunset Ridge Golf Links. Bring your lunch and chips, pickles, drinks and dessert will be provided. Coffee and tea will be available at the Golf Course Counter. This will be a day to socialize, ask questions of your board, walk around the golf grounds, play cards or games. If you have a special talent feel free to share with the group. FMI Gerry 839-3859. LRSC is a drop-in center open Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop in to socialize, play a table game, craft or join the puzzle table.

Windham Historical Society wants your extra plants! The Society is holding its annual Plant Sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 24, from 8 to 5 p.m. at the museum headquarters, Windham Center Road. Electronic Recycling

On Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Windham Hill UCC will host an Electronic Recycling Day at Windham Mall. All towns can participate. Items accepted include TVs, computers, monitors, hard drives, laptops, printers, cordless and cell phones, VCR, DVD audio equipment, stereos, speakers. No household appliances. Money donations accepted upon entry to cover cost of organizing the event and to fund support of local church mission needs.

3rd Maine Civil War Encampment

On May 24-26, the Local and Legendary: Maine in the Civil War Gorham-Windham grant group will help sponsor the 3rd Maine Civil War Encampment at the Windham Historical Society grounds. Stop by to see what life was like 150 years ago for the men, women, boys and girls of the time. Many events will be happening, including the 3rd Maine’s participation in the Memorial Day Parade on the 26th.The Windham Historical Society is located at 234 Windham Center Road.

Picture This

Everyone is cordially invited to Picture This, a fantastic fundraiser to benefit New England’s largest horse shelter, the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals in South Windham.
