The Cape Elizabeth High School mock trial team captured the state championship for the third year in a row on Saturday, besting Lewiston in a simulated case staged in the Supreme Judicial Courtroom of the Cumberland County Courthouse in Portland. Justice Donald Alexander presided. Nineteen Cape Elizabeth students, led by senior captains Chelsey Whynot, Seth Dobieski and Josie Barth, had roles as witnesses and attorneys, taking turns at both sides of the case, which involved a fraternity pledge-master on trial for the hazing death of a student. The Capers are coached by social studies teacher Mary Page with Head Attorney coach Dick O’Meara and Assistant Attorney coaches David Hillman and Jon Sahrbeck, the latter a Cape Elizabeth alum now working as a Maine assistant attorney general. Cape Elizabeth will represent Maine at the national mock trial tournament in Indianapolis May 9-11, 2013.
