Just as it had 10 days earlier, Saturday’s Westbrook vs. Kennebunk boys tennis match would be decided by Blazes senior Kevin Lessard and Rams junior Scott Goldsmith.

The second meeting, however, was a regional semifinal and it was tighter than the first, but Lessard prevailed again, 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), at Portland’s Racket and Fitness Center.

“Everyone in the place knew it was going to come down to third singles,” said Westbrook coach Tim Gillis, “and Kevin was able to come though the pressure with amazing cool and panache.”

The second-seeded Blazes (12-2) advance to play in the Western Maine final today (June 7) at Bates College in Lewiston against fourth-ranked Windham (11-2). Westbrook topped the Eagles three weeks ago, 3-2.

Windham advanced by topping Gorham, 4-1, Monday. Mike Ryan won at number three singles for the eighth-seeded Rams (6-8) only point.

Gorham’s girls were edged by Sanford, 3-2, in the regional quarterfinals Thursday. It was just two weeks after the Rams swept the Redskins, 5-0, in a regular season match-up.

Westbrook’s girls beat Marshwood, 3-2, in preliminary round action last Tuesday, but were swept, 5-0, two days later by top-ranked and unbeaten Kennebunk.
