In the three years Carson Lynch has owned the Gorham Grind, he has seen a backlog of local artists wanting to showcase their work inside his shop.
That prompted him and friend Jeremy Greene to find a better way to display artists’ talents.
They found a better way with Gorham Art Fair, which enters its second year on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Shaw Gymnasium inside the Gorham Municipal Center. The fair begins at 9 a.m. and ends around 4 p.m.
“It’s a venue for all the artists here in town that really don’t have a venue to show their work,” Lynch said. “I became aware of how much talent there is here in town because of the waiting list for art work to show here on my walls.”
Patrons will have the chance to look at 45 artists’ works, listen to several local musicians and partake in a pumpkin-painting contest, with prices donated from area businesses.
Works will range from high-end, fine art paintings to holiday crafts like Christmas tree ornaments, said Greene, who owns the Art Guru on 12 Main St.
Both Greene and Lynch said they expect this year’s event to be packed based on last year’s success, when several hundred people come out to view the works despite pouring rain.
“We were surprised and happy with the turnout,” Greene said. “We are really looking forward to this next one.”
There is something for everybody to enjoy. Kids and adults can have their faces painted and some artists will create works at the show that will be sold at the end of the day.
Artists displaying works come from all over southern Maine and paid a $40 fee to enter their non-juried work. The event is free to the public.
“We want to promote artists and the art community in the area,” Greene said. “We want to let people realize how many talented artists there are in the Gorham area because it’s open to anyone.”
Musicians, including the indie rock band Dear Claudia and a Native American flutist, will be playing outside the venue, Lynch said. Lynch said he is still looking to fill the musical bill with a few more Gorham-area musicians.
There will also be a bake sale, cookout and storytellers.
Donations of artwork of all types are being accepted and will be sold through a silent auction to benefit The Gorham Food Pantry. To donate work, contact Lynch or Greene at 839-3003.
“It’s definitely an event for people of all ages,” Lynch said. “We just want people to come out and enjoy the day.”
