Meeting House Hill topic of Nov. 13 program
The South Portland Historical Society will host another of its popular Evening Chat programs at City Hall on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
The chat, entitled, “Meeting House Hill Memories,” will focus on the history of the Meeting House Hill neighborhood, including a look back at Prescott’s Pharmacy, the old A&P, the movie house at the Cape Theatre and Willard and Roosevelt schools.
The Meeting House Hill neighborhood covers the area from Red’s Dairy Freeze and up Cottage Road to Drillen Hardware. This upcoming program is intended to preserve memories and oral history related to this neighborhood.
The program, which is free and open to the public, will include a short slide show of historic photographs of the area, along with a roundtable discussion. Anyone who has ever lived or worked in the Meeting House Hill area is invited to take part.
In addition, the historical society is seeking old photographs and artifacts from the Meeting House Hill and surrounding neighborhoods. Call 767-7299 for more information, including how to donate old photos for the slideshow.
Library to hold Artsy Afternoon
The South Portland Public Library will hold the third session of its new Artsy Afternoons program on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. This month, make a creative centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table.
Participating crafters will create beautiful pumpkin or apple centerpieces out of recycled books, which when displayed on a holiday table will be fabulous conversation starters.

Evening of short plays at SPHS
On Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m., the South Portland High School Drama Club will present two short plays – “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Hitchhiker” – in the auditorium.
“The Monkey’s Paw,” is based on a short horror story written by W.W. Jacobs in 1902. In the tale the owner of the monkey’s paw is granted three wishes, but there are unforeseen consequences.
“The Hitchhiker,” is a radio play by Lucille Fletcher that was first presented on the air in November of 1941. It tells the story of a man named Ronald Adams, who is driving from Brooklyn to California and keeps seeing the same hitchhiker at various spots along the road.
Adams becomes obsessed with this hitchhiker, vowing to run him off the road the next time he sees him. In a series of events, Adams eventually calls home, only to find out his mother is in the hospital, prostrated with grief over the death of her son.
Volunteers offer Thanksgiving dinner
On Thursday, Nov. 27, the South Portland Community Volunteers will host a free, homemade Thanksgiving dinner at the VFW hall on Peary Terrace.
The meal will be served from noon to 3 p.m. Free transportation can also be arranged. Call 767-2575 after 3 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday to make a reservation, make arrangements for transportation or for more information.
Yoga at the library
Hatha yoga instructor Tisha Bremner will host a yoga session for kids ages 3-8 at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the South Portland Public Library.
In this free storybook yoga class, Bremner will bring to life enjoyable stories teaching literacy and well-being.

Lyric Theater to present ‘Oliver!’
“Oliver!,” based on Charles Dickens’ famous novel, “Oliver Twist,” opens at the Lyric Music Theater in South Portland on Friday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m.
The show, which was first staged in London in 1960, has won three Tony awards and the score includes memorable numbers, such as “Food Glorious Food,” “You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two.”
The play runs through Dec. 7 and show times are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $21.99 or $17.99 for seniors. Group rates are also available for 10 or more.

Business After 5 at Hancock Lumber
On Thursday, Nov. 6, 5-7 p.m., the South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Community Chamber will host a Business After 5 event at the Home Again by Hancock Lumber store, located at 140 Maine Mall Road in South Portland.

Library hosts The Flukes in concert
On Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., the South Portland Public Library will host The Flukes – a bright and energetic ukulele ensemble made up of staff from the library in Falmouth.
The Flukes play everything from the Beatles to bluegrass and have performed with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, at the Yarmouth Clam Festival and during First Friday Art Walks in Portland.
With a diverse repertoire that spans many different musical genres, including oldies, Hawaiian ballads, and rock and roll, The Flukes are sure to please. The concert is free and open to the public. Call 767-7650 or see http://southportlandlibrary.com for more information.
