Local American Legion honors

American Legion Post 128 member Donald Roy was recently honored by Edward Davis, Commander of the Maine Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association.

The award ceremony for the decorated Korean War Veteran was held Feb. 26 at the Post’s monthly meeting. Roy was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation signed by Governor Baldacci, two campaign and service medals, and a shadow box containing Roy’s service medals, ribbons, rank stripes, and other insignia.

The same evening, the Post was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the National office to recognize their achievement of 100 percent membership renewal in 2008. Post members Bruce Chapman and former 2nd District Commander Bob Morrill also received Certificates of Appreciation from Post Commander Carl Henriksen for their contributions and efforts to the success of the Post in 2008.

Explore the forest

As part of their Nature Series, Standish Recreation is offering the class Forest Explorations Saturday, March 2, 10-11 a.m. at Johnson’s Field. This class is designed to stimulate curiosity about trees and plants and to gain an appreciation of its uses by wildlife and people. Participants will look at a tree core and age the tree, earn about making maple syrup and learn to identify trees as you explore the forest. The cost of this class is $12 for a family or $5 for an individual. For more information contact the Standish Recreation office at 642-2875.

For the kids

The Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Department is offering Standish parents the chance to take the night off while their children participate in the Kids Night out Program. Kids Night Out will be held on Saturday, March 21 at the Alfond Recreation Center on campus.

The event, is open to children ages 7-13, and offers games, movies, swimming, rock climbing, arts & crafts and sports. The program goes from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and costs $9 per child and $6 for each additional child from the same family.

No pre-registration is necessary. Kids Night Out is sponsored and supervised by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Saint Joseph’s College.

Bedtime stories

On March 25, children from area schools, grades K-3, are invited to attend and enjoy the reading of a good book, participate in related activities and munch on snacks at Saint Joseph’s College for Wednesday night Bedtime Stories.

The theme for this event is Springtime Activities . It starts at 6 p.m. in the first-floor lounge at the Harold Alfond Center. Don’t forget to bring a blanket or your child’s favorite teddy bear. This is a free event sponsored through the Saint Joseph’s chapter of Student Educators Association of Maine. Registration for Bedtime Stories is not necessary. Project Graduation auction

Bonny Eagle Project Graduation is currently hosting an online auction to benefit the class of 2009. Items, including yoga sessions, Portland Pirate tickets, photography sessions, and gift certificates, were donated by local artisans, merchants, and care givers.
