FREEPORT – Andrea Pike-Sharron of Biddeford and Kate Andreu of Brunswick hope to open a new dance studio in Freeport at 1456 U.S. Route 1 in early July.
Pike-Sharron and Andreu want to locate their dance school in the basement of Positive FM, owned by Bethesda Christian Broadcasting.
The town’s Staff Review Board was scheduled to consider a permit for Fusion Dance Academy on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting was held after the Tri-Town Weekly’s deadline.
Caroline Pelletier, town planning assistant, said that the Staff Review Board, instead of the Project Review Board, handled the Fusion Dance application because the location does not require site changes. Pelletier said that a decision was expected following the meeting. A new sign is the only substantive addition outside the property, she said.
Pike-Sharron, 39, has been dancing since she was 6, and instructing dance for 22 years. She is an instructor at All The Dance in Buxton and a teacher at Portsmouth School of Ballet.
“I just decided it’s my time,” Pike-Sharron said. “I have a business partner.”
Pike-Sharron said that Fusion Dance will offer instruction to both those from preschool age and older, including adults. She, Andreu and their staff will offer ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, modern dance, yoga and Zumba, she said.
A grand opening with free demonstrations, raffles and more is planned for June 23, from 1-6 p.m. Some classes will start on July 7.
Pike-Sharron will be chief executive officer, while Andreu will serve as chief financial officer.
“We’ve danced together for many, many years,” Pike-Sharron said. “She auditioned for my dance company.”
Pike-Sharron said that she commutes every day to four dance studios, and looks forward to the stability the Freeport location will provide.
“Freeport’s an untapped area,” she said. “It’s my turn. I’ve put in my time.”
A contractor will install new flooring and lighting at the new dance studio.
“What I want to bring to Freeport is strong morals, and good technique with dancing,” she said.
Fusion Dance’s students will participate in local parades, take trips to Boston and participate in dance camps. There will be a children’s performance team, as well.
“That’s where Kate and I are at,” Pike-Sharron said. “We seek it all.”
Fusion Dance Academy has about 100 students ready to join. She invites anyone else interested to call her at 450-1989.
Sande Updegraph, executive director at the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce, was enthused to learn that a dance academy is coming to town.
“There are performing companies, but dance lessons, not that I know of,” Updegraph said.
Fusion Dance will be a great addition to Freeport, Updegraph said.
“It really puts a focus on the young people,” she said. “Good for them.”
