Site work is under way for the new, 130,000-square-foot Cabela’s store in Scarborough, on Haigis Parkway at exit 42 off the Maine Turnpike, seen here both from the air and from the ground. Nebraska-based Cabela’s, which calls itself the World’s Foremost Outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, expects to attract more than 3 million visitors a year to Scarborough. According to developer Gene Beaudoin of New England Expeditions, the project as a whole is expected to generate more than $100 million a year in retail sales and create about 800 new jobs. Beaudoin said the construction of the foundation will begin in the middle of July. Work is currently on or a little ahead of schedule, according to Beaudoin. Meanwhile, the developer is negotiating with a several tenants, including a handful of restaurants, to fill in the 15 or so smaller lots that will be on the site. Beaudoin said he expects to be able to name some of these businesses within the next two weeks.
