The Scarborough Board of Education will consider naming the high school’s two gyms after Richard Plummer and school alumni.
At its Nov. 3 meeting the board will consider naming the older gymnasium after Plummer. Plummer was a physical education teacher and coach at Scarborough High School from 1957 to 1994. During his career he coached varsity baseball, basketball and soccer.
He also cared for the district’s athletic fields. The name of the gym will be the Richard A. Plummer Gymnasium.
The new gym that is nearing completion will be called Alumni Gymnasium in honor of all of the school’s graduates.
Earlier this fall the school district named the high school fields at Clifford “Kippy” Mitchell Sports Complex after the town’s longtime electrician, who was instrumental in bringing lighting to the fields.
“It’s nice to name things after people,” said Superintendent Bill Michaud. “It’s a nice way to recognize their work.”
