Songo Locks Sports Day
What better day to hold a Sports Appreciation Day than the day after the Super Bowl? Songo Locks Elementary asked all students to wear the colors, logos, or sports shirts of their favorite teams. Even teachers got in on the act. No doubt it was an interesting day for Red Sox and Yankee fans at Songo Locks!
Naples Winter Carnival
Whether you’re a summer or a winter person, there are certain facts about winter in Naples you cannot dispute: there is a heck of a lot more room to play (thanks to Long Lake), it is less crowded (less tourists), and easier to get around, especially if you have a snowmobile! The Naples Winter Carnival capitalizes on all of these. The festivities begin Friday, Feb. 12, with a Snowmobile Torch Light Parade that starts at the Black Bear Cafe? on Route 302 and ends at Bray’s for a bonfire, music and of course, great food and drink. Saturday and Sunday, activities start at 9 a.m. and include the popular Radar Run and many kids activities. If the kids get cold, there is even a free shuttle to the Naples Town Hall for some hot cocoa, games and movies. The Naples Fire Department will be there with food all day long. Don’t worry if you forget your mittens because Harvest Hills will be there selling some! Organizer Dan Allen promises this year’s event will be bigger than ever. They’ve increased the Radar Run track length to 1000 feet and have also added a 700-foot snow track. For many, the highlight of the carnival will be the fireworks which start promptly at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Fore more information, visit www.muddyriversnoseekers.org or call 318-6965 or 693-3867.
Work Ready program a success
MSAD 61 and 72 Regional Adult and Community Education are doing good things over at their new space in the former Crooked River Elementary School. Work Ready is a program that teaches valuable life and work skills to help people of all ages prepare for the work world. Program members learned about dressing for success, resume and cover letters, interview skills and communication with community business leaders. Graduation for this four-week program was held last Thursday. It was a joyful (and tearful) occasion. Each student was overwhelmed with appreciation for the program. Program Director Madeline Litz and instructor Dawn Merriam have done an outstanding job instilling confidence and practical skills that will aid these students for a lifetime. Congratulations on a job well done to all! If you are interested in finding out about what Work Ready can offer you, visit www.workreadyforme.com or contact Litz at 627-4291, ext. 60, or [email protected].

New library handbook
Lake Region High School students and employees played a huge role in rewriting and distributing 750 new Maine School Librarian Handbooks. The handbook, originally written in 1984, was revamped by the committee of 13, and chaired by LRHS’s library media specialist, Debbie Gahm. On Jan. 23, over 30 library personnel traveled far and wide to LRHS to acquire the new handbooks at the Maine Association of School Libraries monthly board meeting. The Printery in Bridgton provided the printing work, while the students of the high school’s Diversified Occupations program helped to put the books together. Congratulations on a joint effort well done. The handbook will also be available online shortly at www.maslibraries.org.
