Two Cape Elizabeth lobstermen rescued passengers from a capsized canoe in Kettle recently.

The two canoers were paddling out from Kettle Cove near McKenney Point in Cape Elizabeth July 8 when strong waves flipped their canoe, said Cape Fire Chief Phillip McGouldrick.

Unable to flip their boat upright, they floated alongside it without life jackets for an unspecified amount of time. “It’s tough,” said McGouldrick. Once you flip a canoe, “it’s practically impossible to get back into.”

A resident on McKenney Point spotted the two floating about 200 yards off the point and reported it to police.

Before Cape’s Water Extrication Team arrived, father and son team Jodie and Tucker Jordan, who were out lobstering, heard the call on their radio. Jodie, who is also a firefighter, and his son, responded immediately, rescuing the swimmers and pulling their boat back to shore, said McGouldrick.
