FREEPORT – The campus of L.L Bean on Main Street in Freeport played host to the fourth annual Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival last Saturday, an all-day event that featured pumpkin carving, live music, food vendors, and thousands of pumpkins. According to Camp Sunshine Executive Director Matt Hoidal, the event raised more than $66,000. All the proceeds go toward sponsorship of terminally ill children and their families who stay at the Casco camp. “It was a wonderful turnout on a chilly fall day,” said Hoidal. “It’s especially great to see the involvement of the community, especially the schools. We estimate there were between 10,000 and 20,000 people who attended. Overall, it was a great success.” Pumpkins covered almost every square inch of the campus, above. Freeport resident Sheila Towne, at right, checks out the crowd as her son Porter carves a pumpkin. “I’ve never seen so many pumpkins,” she said.
