The Gorham field hockey team is now 2-0 after Tuesday’s 5-0 win against visiting Noble. The defending Western Maine Class A regional champions also claimed a 5-1 win over Massabesic last Friday afternoon in Waterboro.
Goal scorers against the Knights in Tuesday’s home opener included Kayleigh Ballantyne (2), Melanie Hallsworth, Whitney Tulloch and Hannah Prince.
For the first 42 minutes of play in Waterboro last Friday afternoon, the Massabesic High field hockey team went toe-to-toe with Gorham in the season opener for both clubs. But the Rams scored three goals in three minutes – midway through the second half – to break a scoreless deadlock and they eventually moved on to a 5-1 victory in Waterboro.
Although Gorham pressured the Mustangs throughout the first half, Massabesic’s defense (and goalie Ashleigh Gilman in particular) was able to withstand numerous scoring opportunities by the visitors to send the game into the halftime break at 0-0.
The pace of the first half continued into the second with the Rams forcing the Mustangs to play defense much of the time.
Gorham’s second half goals came from Hannah Prince (2), Corey Perkins, Ellen Footer and Whitney Tulloch.
“We need to work hard to maintain a positive team chemistry, which feeds our passion for the game and our determination to give our best each day,” said Gorham coach Amber Hatch as she explained what the Rams need to do to be successful again this year.
The Rams’ defense hasn’t been tested too severely in its two games so far this year. But that should change tonight when Gorham travels to Sanford. The Rams defeated the Redskins in last year’s regional championship game. The Redskins will enter the game at 2-0 as well with wins against Biddeford (6-2) and Cheverus (2-0).
