Windham Historical Society presents Windham Heritage Day on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Step back in time to Windham’s early frontier days with a special reenactment of the fight between Stephen Manchester and Chief Polin by Harmon’s Company of Snowshoemen at 11 a.m. Stephen Manchester’s actual musket will be on display at the museum!

There will also be special house tours around Windham including:

The 1764 Parson Smith House, our future Living History Museum and Province Fort.

The 1797 Ezekiel Varney House, featuring a special collection of quilts and old clothing.

The 1807 Smith House, featuring an outstanding armaments collection.

The 1820 Goold House, a National Historic Landmark.

The 1952 Dr. Branson House, featuring an extensive doll collection.

Tour two of Windham’s oldest churches, Windham Hill Church and Friends Church, and both museums, the Historical Society headquarters and Old Grocery. A guided tour of the Gambo Gunpowder Mill Site by Maurice Whitten starts at 9:30 a.m.

On Friday night, Aug. 11, don’t miss a lecture and slide show starting at 7 p.m. at the Windham Public Library, by special guest Maurice Whitten, author of “Gunpowder Mills of Maine.”

Tickets are $20 on the day of the event, $18 in advance. Tickets for children under 12 are half price. Admission covers all events, program guide and map included. Call 655-3421 or 650-7484 for more information. Proceeds to benefit the Parson Smith House acquisition.
