DURHAM – Jeff Chipman, 53, likes to spread the joy.
In addition to playing keyboard at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Durham, he plays piano and synthesizer in several bands around southern Maine. And for Chipman, it’s a family affair. During the Totally Awesome Craft and Vendor Fair at the church on May 17, his wife Valerie will sing, and daughter Larissa Smith will accompany on guitar. The music will add to a day of fun that also will include crafters, food and more.
For his “day job,” Chipman does carpentry and design work.
Chipman, who lives in Lisbon and grew up in Harpswell, found some time to answer questions regarding his music and what he gets out of it.
Q: What do you play? How often do you perform, and what type of events?
A: I play piano and synthesizer (which I consider different skills even though they look similar). I do solo jazz gigs on piano whenever I can. I also play in several excellent bands that play regularly around southern Maine.
Q: Who are some of your favorite artists?
A: Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Dr. John, Steely Dan, and Tom Waits, to name just a few.
Q; What’s it like performing with your wife and daughter?
A: It is always fun and I wish we had more opportunities to perform together.
Q: Tell us the difference between playing with a band and playing in church.
A: Music is about connection – connection with each other or connection with ourselves. So on a basic level music is the same no matter where it is made – bar, coffeehouse or church.
Q: The Totally Awesome Craft Fair sounds like a fun day. Tell us a little about that.
A: The craft fair was a great time last year and I expect it will be again this year.
