Windham issues Sandy-related bulletins

The town of Windham issued a statement on Hurricane Sandy on Monday related to available emergency shelters. It reads as follows:

“Should weather conditions caused by Hurricane Sandy require the opening of emergency shelters, we will utilize the regional shelters with in the Greater Portland area. The regional shelter is pet friendly. The shelter will provide meals and shower facilities, but you will need to bring all necessary toiletries and towels. If you have a medical condition that requires ongoing medical attention you must seek shelter at a hospital.

In the event shelters are open, and you require transportation to the Regional Shelter, please call 892-2525 and be ready to provide name, address and telephone information. We have a handicapped accessible transportation.

If you have elderly or house-bound neighbors, please check in with them and see if they need help or services.”

The town also decided to close schools early on Monday. The Windham High School and middle school were dismissed at noon and elementary schools were dismissed at 1 p.m. The REAL School at Mackworth Island was released at 12:15 p.m.
