Fall Fun at the Library
If you are interested in participating in a book club for adults which meets periodically, please sign up as an “interested party” at the circulation desk. Jane Kidder will set up an organizational meeting in October where potential members will get together to discuss possible meeting times and dates, the kinds of books they want to read, and other particulars.
This fall, Kidder will be taking over the Young Adult Book Group, which is for grades 5 and up. A letter and flier will soon be available announcing an organizational meeting and pizza gathering to be held in October. Stop by the library to let her know you are interested if you haven’t participated in the YA Book Group before.
The Gray Public Library is also launching a Birthday Club. If you would like to honor a child with a book purchase or wish to suggest a gift of money be used for the purchase of children’s materials, the library will purchase the materials and put a bookplate with the child’s name in the book(s). If you are interested in being a part of this program, please stop in and the library staff can give you all the details.
Life, Death and Knitting
Also at the library, Kathy George presents her ever popular Story Times Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m. Join Sheila Tuesday afternoon, 1-2 p.m., for knitting time. Bring your own project and knit in the company of friends! We also offer a selection of knitting books! A Life and Death seminar will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, 6-8 p.m.

We Remember
A special gathering was held September 11 at 9 a.m. at the Commander Robert Schlegel Memorial behind the Gray New Gloucester High School. Commander Robert A. Schlegel was a career naval officer and family man. He died at age 38 in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack at the Pentagon. There is a monument and garden, maintained by volunteers at Gray-New Gloucester High School, where he graduated in 1981.
Students, teachers and administrators from the high school, State Representative Susan Austin, and friends and family of Robert Schlegel were all present, as were other interested community members. The High School Band played the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” Some of the speakers were Principal Paul Penna of Gray-New Gloucester High School, State Rep. Susan Austin, Colonel Jeffrey Farnsworth and Kaitlin Rokowski, president of the Student Council.
During Sue Austin’s address, she reminded the audience to learn from history, so that Schlegel’s death would not be in vain. Colonel Farnsworth talked about the values he and Robert Schlegel had learned in the service. He spoke about following the acronym “LDRSHIP,” taken from the words loyalty, duty, respect, selfless
service, honor, integrity and personal courage. A framed statement of recognition was given to Schlegel’s brother, David Schlegel.
It was a beautiful late summer day, very reminiscent of that fateful day in 2001 when our world changed. We still remember.
Learning later in life

Exercise in disguise
ZUMBA comes to Gray! Gray Adult Education will be starting their first-ever ZUMBA class Monday, Sept. 22, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., at the Dunn School in New Gloucester. Zumba is a combo of easy dance steps – salsa, merengue, rumba, chacha – set to a hot Latin beat that’s more like a party than a fitness workout. It’s called “exercise in disguise”, and it’s for all ages and all levels. This session will last for six weeks.
