Thanks to Dr. Mark Wasowski for his generous donation to Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors. It is through donations such as this that WNHN is able to help Windham residents in need of fuel assistance during our cold winters. Manchester School Reunion

Windham’s Manchester School is 40 years old and a reunion is being planned by Bill Diamond, the first principal of the school, and a group of teachers. Bill tells us the school was originally called Windham Elementary School and was one of the first open-concept schools in the state. If there are any teachers and staff who were there at the beginning in September 1973, please contact Bill at 892-8941 or by email, [email protected]. The reunion group will meet at the school at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, for a tour of the school and lunch.

Cancer Support Group Meets

Windham Cancer Support Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, at the Windham Public Library. The meeting is for all cancer victims, survivors and caregivers of anyone dealing with cancer. The mission of the WCSG is to provide education and support in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Check on Facebook.

Steamboat Program

On Monday, Aug. 26, a program about the history of steamboats on Sebago Lake will be presented at 7 p.m. by Windham Historical Society at the Veterans Center in back of the Windham Mall. Refreshments will be available and a Q&A period. The PowerPoint presentation has many photographs of the steamboats and the area. Suggested donation is $5. Help for Vets

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay is available at the Windham Veterans Center, as she is on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month, from 9 a.m. until noon. She assists veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed. The Veterans Center is in North Windham, off Route 302, in back of the Windham Mall. Watch for the signs.

Driver Safety Class

Register before Sept. 1 for the AARP Driver Safety Class to be presented at Windham Public Library on Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registration fee is $12 for AARP members, $14 for others. Advance registration is required. Call John Hammond, 655-4943.

Food Pantry Hours

Windham Food Pantry will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, for Labor Day. Senior pick-up will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Call 892-1906 if you have any questions. The food pantry is open Monday through Thursday, except for holidays and is available to residents in need. The Clothes Closet is open Monday and Tuesday mornings; clothing is free.

Windham Auto Show

On Sunday, Sept. 15, Windham/Raymond Athletic Boosters will hold the Windham Auto Show at Windham Mall (behind Hannaford) in North Windham, Route 302. Show cars entry, 7 a.m.-11 a.m.; judging, 11 a.m.; spectators from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission, show cars $5 donation; adults $5, seniors/students $3; children 5 and under, free. This will take place rain or shine.

Cumberland Fair Volunteers

Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals is seeking volunteers to keep their booth staffed at Cumberland Fair from Sept. 22-28, in the Exhibition Hall, open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Volunteers are needed for all shifts on Saturday and Sunday, and from 5-9 p.m. on weekdays. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. There is no selling, just handing out literature and accepting donations. Volunteers in shifts of four-hour minimums are needed. Call Kathy or Meris at 892-3040 or email [email protected] to sign up. Golf Tournament Benefits Project Graduation

A golf tournament to benefit Windham High School Class of 2014 Project Graduation will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Naples Country Club, Route 114, Naples. Lobster Dinner

On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Knights of Columbus Council 10020 will hold a lobster dinner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Roosevelt Trail, from 5-6 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and include a lobster, corn on the cob, salads, rolls, beverage and desserts. Option: Two hamburgers or cheeseburgers instead of lobster, $9 per person. Get $3 cash back at the door if you bring something for the food pantry. Items most needed include four-roll packs of bath tissue, paper towels, toothpaste, tooth brushes, laundry detergent, napkins, peanut butter, low sodium soups, canned meat, tuna fish, bottles of dish soap. Tickets sold in advance after the 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday Masses at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church or by calling 232-6473.

Jonathan Edwards Benefit Concert

On Friday, Oct. 11, Music with a Mission will present a Jonathan Edwards concert at 7 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Historical Society Open

Windham Historical Society is open to the public on Thursday mornings and by appointment by calling 892-1433 or visit the website at www.windhamhistorical.org. Current displays include a Wall of Honor, picturing veterans from all wars (not all veterans, though), a display of books by Windham writers or about Windham, and a hand-hooked rug, which is being raffled. The design is colorful blueberries and strawberries.

Recently, the Knights of Columbus Council 10020 donated approximately 700 pounds of food and other items to Windham Food Pantry. The donation was the result of the fundraising efforts of Council 10020 and individual member donations.
