The Scarborough Public Library completes its “Passport to the World” series for children in Grades K-3 with a tradition-filled “visit” to Sweden on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 4 p.m.
Scarborough resident Karina Rathmell and her daughter, Sylvia, will talk about the Swedish celebration of Santa Lucia. Sylvia will dress as Santa Lucia for the program.
Santa Lucia is celebrated each year on Dec. 13. The oldest daughter in the household dresses as Lucia and brings saffron buns to her parents for a special breakfast in bed. She wears a long, white dress with a red sash, a crown of lights and sings a traditional song in Swedish accompanied by girls carrying candles and boys carrying star wands. The belief is that Lucia brings light during one of the darkest times of the year, reminding people that spring and light days will come again.
During the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to make a paper head wreath or star wand. Traditional Swedish cookies will also be served. To register, contact the Scarborough Public Library at 883-4723. For more information about this program and other library events, visit www.library.scarborough.me.us.
