Canal Program
On Monday, July 22, Windham Historical Society presents an illustrated program about the Cumberland & Oxford Canal and where it can still be found. Program starts at 7 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center, behind the Windham Mall. A $5 donation is suggested and all proceeds benefit the continued building of the Village Green at the Society’s Windham Center site. Kelli’s 5K
On Saturday, Aug. 17, the Kelli’s 5K walk/run will be held in memory of a 10-year-old Windham resident who passed away in 2010. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Windham Playground Fund and the St. Anne’s Ladybug Playground. The race starts at the high school at 9 a.m. Two courses, road running or trail running; $15 per person; free for Windham students and seniors and open to all ages. Senior Space
If you know of a space available, permanently, for senior citizens to meet on a regular basis, please contact Blanche Alexander at [email protected] or call 892-5604. She is the president of the Lakes Region Senior Center, which meets and will also be your contact to get information about joining the very active group.
Pinochle, Chess
There’s an interest in forming a pinochle card-playing group at Lakes Region Senior Center. Those who are interested can call Bob Grey at 210-497-1781. Chess players can contact Rhonda Forbes at 310-0546. Time and day is up to the participants, as the center is open Monday-Thursday. The organization is still seeking a place to meet after Aug. 31.
American Legion Meets
Due to the Independence Day holiday, there was no American Legion Post 148 meeting on July 3. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Cookout Supreme
On Saturday, July 20, the Raymond Village Church will hold its annual barbecue from 4:30-6 p.m. at the church. Burgers, brats, hot dogs, beans, and all the fixin’s will be available, and take-out orders are welcome.
Senior Center Anniversary
Lakes Region Senior Center is located at 40 Acorn Street, Gorham. This is the former Little Falls School. It’s easy to become a member and visit with others in a relaxed setting. Hours in the summer are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Monday, July 22, at 10 a.m., What You Need to Know About Homecare will be presented. A nurse from Family Health Care will make this presentation giving valuable information for seniors and their offspring. This is open to the public, bring a friend and/or relative. Refreshments will be served. This is a drop-in center, become a member and join the daily activities or just socialize. Daily independent activities include needlework, crafts, cards, cribbage, board games, Wii games and many more.
Library Closed
Friday Mornings
The Windham Public Library is closed from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays, temporarily, while the search for a library director is ongoing. Notification will be made when they resume regular hours.
Medicare Help?
On Tuesday, July 16, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411 or to find a seminar and counseling session near you.
