STANDISH – Doris Coletti, of Hearthside Road in Standish, was presented the Boston Post Cane on Wednesday during a special ceremony at the Steep Falls Fire Barn.

At the age of 98, Colletti holds the distinction of being Standish’s oldest resident, thereby allowing her to bear the famous cane, named for the Boston Post, once the nation’s leading newspaper in terms of circulation.

Coletti, who was determined to be the oldest resident according to the town’s most recent voter list, will hold a replica of the cane, while the actual cane – made of African ebony wood and a 14-karat gold head – stays safe in town hall.

Coletti, who has lived in Standish for three years, was joined at the ceremony by four generations of family members, including her great-great grandchildren.

During the short ceremony, Glena Jamison, of the Standish Historical Society, introduced Coletti to about 40 senior citizens attending a bimonthly meeting at the fire barn. Standish Town Manager Gordon Billington then read a history of the distinctive cane and presented the cane to Coletti. Following the ceremony, those gathered ate cake in honor of Coletti’s 98th birthday, which she celebrated the day before the ceremony.

Past holders of the cane include immediate past recipient Florence Sturgis, who held it from 2005; Hazel Wescott (1999-2005) and Eva Stuart (1994-1999).
