The living rooms of retirees all over Windham briefly went quiet last week as the Windham Police Department changed its radio frequency, sending listeners scrambling to adjust their scanners.

Police Chief Rick Lewsen said his department changed the frequency to 158.8125 on April 24. He said the new signal is on a narrow band with two additional digits and some older scanners will not be able to pick it up.

Lewsen said his department has been purchasing radio equipment after receiving a federal homeland security grant a few years ago and had used the old frequency until now.
