I have been reading about no senior center in Scarborough from the time it was turned down buy a” huge” margin of 238 votes. If that were a vote for a political office, do you think there just might be a recount?
Now, as a result of this “strong” showing of the will of the people, the town council appointed a study committee. This committee, at a cost to the taxpayers of $10,000, hired a firm to study 275 senior citizens out of 4,000. This “only” excluded 3,725 senior citizens!
With a professionally done survey of 275 seniors, you can assume the results to be a true picture of what 4,000 seniors of Scarborough think and want, right? Being a retired businessman, I would hesitate to open a business oriented to the senior population of Scarborough doing a study of only 275 seniors.
Now the study and three councilors suggested that “seniors be patient,” that we just spent $25 million on our high school and come November we maybe spending still another $54,845,780, and that “only” totals $79,845,780. We know most are on fixed incomes, and yet for years are still paying for our schools. We have found many venues for you to use. Yes, we know there are scheduling and transportation problems, most are not suitable for all that we could do in a senior center and only a few are really handicapped and senior friendly. And you must remember schools are built for young people with young people in mind.
For all the taxpayers, some venues come with a high rental fee, though most senior centers, once up and running, are whole or partly self-sustaining. There are ways to finance a senior center but unfortunately, Scarborough is too affluent to avail itself to some of them.
