Robin Whitten of Portland was enduring treatment for breast cancer when she had a vision. She wanted to see pink tulips in the spring.

In 2004 her dream became reality and gardens have sprung up all over Maine. Best of all, as the tulips blossom and bring hope, they are also bringing in research money to the Maine Cancer Foundation.

Locally, the Windham Cancer Support Group and the Windham Rotary Garden Club have joined forces to create a garden at the rotary and the public library. Our vision, like Robin’s, is big. It’s also a community-building project.

Already, Roosevelt Trail Nursery & Garden Center and Busque Construction are on board ready to pitch in. The Lakes Region Farmers Market is allowing us to distribute information on Saturday mornings.

Thank you to all of those who have joined our efforts – including members of the aforementioned clubs. I also want to invite anyone willing to join the team to spread the word, collect donations and/or plant some bulbs to contact me by e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 892-0648.

To learn more about the project visit www.pinktulipproject.org. To donate to our garden, give to a garden and look for Windham Hope Gardens on that Web site.

In hope,

Sarah Plummer-Elliott
