They did it again. And they made it look easy.

The Scarborough High School girls indoor track team won its third straight Class A state championship by nearly doubling the score of its nearest competitor on Monday at Bates College in Lewiston. The Red Storm finished with 96 points to top runner-up Thornton Academy (55) and third place Brunswick (54).

The rest of the top 10 in the 20-team scoring field included Gorham in fourth (42) followed by Messalonskee (30), Bangor (26), Edward Little (25), Bonny Eagle (23), Cony (14) and Mt. Ararat (13).

Scarborough’s dominance started in the meet’s first event and it didn’t let up until the points were awarded in the final event of the day.

The Red Storm foursome of Crysti Tsujiura, Hilary Curtis, Kaitlynn Saldanha, and Erica Jesseman turned in the fastest time in the 4 x 800 meter relay (10:00.97). And Scarborough junior Annie Mills followed that up with a second-place effort in the 55 meter hurdles. Jesseman then finished second in the mile and the team was on its way.

Senior Allison Chamberlain won the 400 meter dash (1:01.17) and sophomore Whitney Chamberlain placed fifth in the same event. Saldanha then set a record while winning the 800 meter run (2:18.44) with Curtis not far behind in sixth place.

Super seniors Jesseman and Saldanha finished one-two in the two-mile run earning the Red Storm a hefty 18 points in the process.

Another quartet of Scarborough runners earned points with Kira Gordon, Alexandria Laniewski, Lauren Blaisdell and Annie Mills combining to take fourth place in the 4 x 200 relay. Sophomore Catie Funk finished third in the shot put and junior Lily Parenteau tied for second in the high jump.

Scarborough put an exclamation point on their victory with Kira Gordon, Sarah Gordon and Devon Leighton finishing third, fourth and fifth respectively in the pole vault competition. The trio’s efforts earned another 12 points for the Red Storm.

South Portland’s girls finished with six points on the day thanks to a fourth-place finish by Olivia Hendry in the two-mile race and Lindsay Soule’s fifth-place effort in the 800.

Scarborough boys finish fifth

The Scarborough High boys team also had some fine performances on Monday finishing fifth with 29 points. Bangor won its first ever Class A indoor track title with a score of 84 points followed by Gorham (78), Thornton (46), Lewiston (39) and then Scarborough.

The Red Storm’s Ben Violette, Henry Prosack, Sam Chick and Scott Delano picked up a point with a sixth place time in the 4 x 800 meter relay.

Senior Phil Lambert had the eighth fastest time in the 55 meter hurdles prelim, but he improved on that with a second place finish in the final. He also placed fifth in the 200.

Brecht Moulin, another Scarborough senior, finished second in the 800. Freshman Nate Hathaway had a strong race and he took fourth in the one mile. And sophomore Brad Nakanishi placed fourth in the pole vault competition.

Phil Lambert, Jimmy Rouse, Scott Delano and Brecht Moulin took fifth in the 4 x 200 relay.

South Portland’s boys scored in a couple of events on Monday. Sophomore David Hardison earned a point for South Portland with a sixth-place finish in the 55 meter hurdles and the Red Riots’ combination of Will Cabana, David Hardison, Jonathan Linscott and Ian Golder took sixth in the 4 x 200 meter relay.
