Skelton awarded

Marcie Skelton of South Portland has received the annual Leadership Award from the New England Rehabilitation Hospital in Portland. The award recognizes a member of the hospital’s team who has made significant contributions during the prior year. The hospital holds its annual awards ceremony each spring.

Summer movies at Bug Light

The South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Community Chamber is once again partnering with the city of South Portland to offer movies under the stars at Bug Light Park.

The summer movie series begins on July 10, at 6 p.m., with the animated Despicable Me 2. Admission is free and movie nights also include door prizes, food vendors, family activities and more.

Summer concerts at Mill Creek

The city of South Portland has announced the schedule for this year’s annual Summer Concerts at Mill Creek Park series. All concerts are held on Wednesday, 6:30-8 p.m., and are free and open to the public. Call 767-7650 or go to www.southportland.org for weather-related cancellations.

July 2: Delta Knights Band. One of Maine’s best rocking blues bands since 1996. Rain date is July 3.

July 9: The Veayo Twins performing with guest Carter Isaac. Their inspirational music delivers a powerful bullying awareness message while combining pop, rock and country music. Rain date is July 10.

July 16: Primo Cubano. Enjoy an evening of traditional Cuban and Latin music. Rain date is July 17.

July 23: Caroline Cotter and The Portland Swing Trio. This award-winning songwriter with a captivating soprano voice will perform with two members of the blue grass band Tricky Britches. Enjoy an evening of classical jazz and swing music. Rain date is Aug. 13.

July 30: Don Campbell. One of Maine’s most popular singer songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Don Campbell will entertain attendees with a variety of music including songs from his new CD, “The Dust Never Settles.” Rain date is July 31.

Aug 6: Mallett Brothers Band. This is a high energy – alternative country/rock band from Maine. It was named the Best Band with the Best Album at the New England Music Awards this year. Rain date is Aug. 7.

Tangents concert canceled at Cape library

The Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth has announced that its planned concert featuring The Tangents, originally scheduled for Thursday, June 19, has been cancelled.

However, the library has lots of other outdoor concerts planned for the summer. Check the library website, at www.thomasmemoriallibrary.org, for more details.

Learn about personal care contracts

On Thursday, June 26, at 2 p.m. the South Portland/Cape Elizabeth TRIAD group will host guest speaker Ed Saxby, a local elder law attorney, who will speak on personal care contracts. The event is free and open to the pubic and attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the local food pantry.

The talk will be held at the Cape Elizabeth Town Hall, 320 Ocean House Road. Light refreshments will also be served. TRIAD is made up of Cape Elizabeth and South Portland senior citizens, police and community members who work together to address problems faced by older citizens.

Project GRACE holds tag sale to combat hunger

Join Project GRACE on Saturday, June 28, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Scarborough, for the Amazing Raise for GRACE campaign to combat hunger.

Scouts, youth groups, neighborhood associations, clubs and church groups, businesses, individuals and families are invited to a giant community tag sale as well as a meal-packing event.

The tag sale will take place from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Reserve your spot now at www.projectgracemaine.org and plan to attend to get some great deals while helping a great cause.

The meal-packing event will take place 10 a.m. to noon. During this high-energy, fun, community event between 60 and 75 volunteers are needed to help pack 10,000 meals. All ages are welcome. Call 883-5111 to RSVP.

Summer writing contest at Scarborough Library

This summer the Scarborough Public Library will hold a writing contest for students in grades 3-12. Interested youth can submit original stories to the “Writers of Summer Contest.” A panel of guest judges will read each entry and the finalists will be honored at a special reception in August. Call 883-4723 or drop by the youth room for more information.

Free bus pass for book borrowers

This summer, June through August, kids 18 and younger will receive a free bus pass to ride the METRO or the local bus service when borrowing a book from the South Portland Public Library. Civic Center trustees sworn in

Cumberland County Commissioners recently appointed four members to the Cumberland County Civic Center Board of Trustees. Those appointed were Neal Pratt of Scarborough, Gary Plummer of Windham, David Maroon of Gorham, and Andrew Braceras of Portland. Braceras will fulfill the current two-year term left vacant by the passing of William Troubh. The others will fulfill a full three-year term.

“We have a deep, diverse group of Trustees to take the Civic Center to the next level,” said Cumberland County Commissioner Chair James Cloutier. “With the renovations behind us, the Pirates back next season, and several acts booked this year, we are well positioned for many years.”

Trustees are appointed by the County Commissioners and are a separate board as determined by Legislation creating the Cumberland County Recreation District in the 1970s.

Trustees go through an application and interview process and are then selected by Cumberland County Commissioners. Other current members of the board are Joseph Gray (2014) of Portland, Mitch Berkowitz (2014) of Gray, Brain Dudley (2014) of Portland, Linda Boudreau (2015) of South Portland and Beth Edmonds (2015) of Freeport.

Students earn Bowdoin honors

At its recent Honors Day ceremony, Bowdoin College recognized the following local students for their academic achievements.

Laura Armstrong, of Scarborough, and Patricia Thibodeau, of Cape Elizabeth were both named Bowdoin Teacher Scholars. Armstrong is majoring in history and minoring in teaching and Thibodeau is majoring in earth and oceanographic science and also minoring in teaching.

In addition, Charlotte Rutty, of Cape Elizabeth, received the Eaton Leith French Prize. She is majoring in English and French at the liberal arts college located in Brunswick.

Jones joins Biddeford Savings

Biddeford Savings announced that Doug Jones has joined the bank to further develop its commercial real estate and small business loans portfolio in the Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Gorham and Westbrook markets.

Jones has more than 20 years of experience in the local banking industry, most recently with Peoples United Bank. With Biddeford Savings, he will develop new business banking opportunities based out of the bank’s new Scarborough office in Oak Hill.
