‘Neon Night’ ?in Bridgton

Last October, more than 150 people came out to experience Pondicherry Park at night. Wearing neon bracelets, necklaces, hats and various other accessories, participants created a neon river winding its way along the trails of the park. The scene was truly magical and people from 1 to 90 enjoyed the experience.

This year organizers by Lakes Environmental Association are hoping that even more people will come out with friends to visit, have fun and support Bridgton’s new downtown park. LEA is asking that a donation of $1 per person be made to help with the continued maintenance of Pondicherry Park. The park was given to the town after Bridgton residents voted to adopt it as their own.

Meet at the Bob Dunning Memorial Bridge behind the Magic Lantern at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. Bring your own glow-in-the-dark accessories as quantities available on-site will be limited. Please do not bring pets since the hike travels beyond the designated dog trail. For more information, call Peter Lowell at 647-8580 or e-mail [email protected].

Oratorical contest open to local students

High school students in Windham-Raymond RSU 14 are invited by the American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 in Windham to compete in the 75th annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program.

The competition, sponsored by the American Legion since 1938, is designed to instill greater knowledge and appreciation of the United States Constitution by high school students. Additionally, the program is designed to develop leadership, the ability to think and speak clearly and the preparation for acceptance of the duties, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship.

To date, more than $3 million dollars in scholarships have been awarded at the national level to contestants. The top three national finalists receive scholarships in the amounts of: $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 respectively. In addition state, district and local contestant winners will receive scholarships. The Post level winner will receive a $200 scholarship. At the state level, first place winners will receive $1,000, second place $500, and third place $300.

The competition is held in two phases. The first phase is a prepared oration on some part of the Constitution selected by the student. The prepared oration must be the original effort of the student and must be 8-10 minutes in length. The second phase of the competition is designed to test the student’s understanding of the Constitution and will be a 3-5 minute response. The topic for the response will be randomly drawn by the student from a selection of questions on the Constitution on the day of the competition.

The contest for Windham-Raymond students is arranged with the full cooperation of school officials. The Windham High School Guidance Office will assist with contest arrangements and rules governing the competition.

The Competition at the Post and District level will be in December (dates to be determined). The state level competition will be on Feb 16, 2013.
